Atherton, Sophie

Sophie Atherton is an accredited Beer Sommelier and was the first woman in the UK to achieve the qualification. An experienced journalist and broadcaster her work is often found within the pages of CAMRA’s BEER magazine and she also counts The Guardian, The Times, Sunday Telegraph and a variety of regional publications among her freelance clients. Her broadcast appearances include a live tasting for BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour and judging the Brits v Belgians beer contest on Jamie & Jimmy’s Food Fight Club on Channel 4.

Sophie’s other beer-related activities include hosting tastings, giving talks and judging in national and international competitions. She also does freelance PR work, one of her notable projects being for Kent Green Hop Beer Fortnight (kentgreenhopbeer.com). As if all that wasn’t enough she is also one half of The Beertalkers – a podcast she co-hosts with fellow Guild member Sam Hill.
