Barnsley’s award winning Acorn Brewery is celebrating a deal to supply Sainsbury’s stores throughout Yorkshire.

Acorn Blonde is now featured in the leading supermarket’s ‘Local Yorkshire Produce’ listing. This makes locally sourced products available to both main supermarkets and ‘local’ stores in the region.

The latest Acorn agreement with a major retail chain, the listing was negotiated through ‘hub company’ Transfresh and involved a rigorous selection procedure to meet Sainsbury’s stringent criteria. It means that the beer could potentially be available in more than 80 outlets across Yorkshire.

One of the Wombwell brewer’s six core ales in the bottle,  Acorn Blonde(4%abv) is the fastest growing brand and described as ‘beautifully balanced tripled hopped pale ale that delivers tantalising citrus notes with a satisfying bitterness and a crisp, clean finish’.

Sales manager David Broadhead said: “To win a listing with such a prestigious retailer is another milestone in Acorn’s strong growth. We are really delighted, because as one of Yorkshire’s leading smaller brewers we need to be seen on the supermarket shelves. Bottled beer sales are important to our future performance and this agreement provides another great opportunity.”

Acorn’s bottled beers now also sell through Tesco, Waitrose, Asda, and Yorkshire’s Rhythm & Booze chain.

Recently production capacity was expanded to some 150 brewer’s barrels or more than 40,000 pints a week, with investment made in fermenting and cold store equipment to develop off-trade sales.

*Note to editors:
Acorn directly supplies pubs throughout Yorkshire and the Midlands with distribution nationwide through drinks wholesalers. Dave and Judi Hughes began brewing nine years ago in Wombwell and have seen their beers win some fifty brewing awards, including Silver for Barnsley Bitter at the Camra Great British Beer Festival 2006.

Production of Barnsley Bitter began on 4th July 2003, using the same yeast strain as the original Barnsley Brewery of the 1850s. This is now integral to the distinctive Yorkshire character of all Acorn award winning brands which also include Barnsley Gold, Old Moor Porter, Sovereign, Gorlovka Imperial Stout, Acorn Blonde and Yorkshire Pride.  In 2007 a major investment in a bespoke 20-barrel-plant on Aldham Industrial Estate, Wombwell, doubled production capacity to 100 brewer’s barrels a week. Since then further investment has increased capacity to some 150 brewer’s barrels a week.

Acorn’s success reflects the burgeoning cask-ale market as craft ale sales grow among young people and women (www.caskreport.co.uk).
